ALA Scholarship Award
Who should apply?
Outstanding applicants with:
- A very high level of academic achievement at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
- A high level of English language proficiency.
- Demonstrated leadership potential and good prospects to influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes in their home country and in the Asia-Pacific region.
- A commitment to participate in a post award program on their return home.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must have completed a university level qualification which is at least equivalent in standard to an Australian Bachelors degree. Candidates with high level academic results in one or more university level degrees are encouraged to apply.
If you are unsure whether your previous university qualification(s) is equivalent in standard to an Australian Bachelors degree, you should seek advice from the Australian Education Centre located in your home country or in your region. International admissions staff in Australian higher education institutions may also provide applicants with guidance on the equivalence of their previous qualifications to an Australian Bachelors degree.
Applicants are expected to have strong written and spoken English language skills. Applicants must:
meet the minimum English language requirements to gain direct admission to their nominated higher education course(s).

Who should apply?
Outstanding applicants :
- Who are already leaders or have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region.
- High level of English language proficiency.
Who is eligible?
Eligible applicants are restricted to Australian organisations demonstrating on-going linkages with counterpart overseas organisations. Australian organisations must be legal entities with an Australian Business Number (ABN). Examples are:
- Australian Government departments - (Federal, State/Territory and local), government agencies, statutory authorities, and Government Business Enterprises.
- Australian organisations or institutions - research centres, higher education providers, vocational education and training providers, peak business bodies, Australian chambers of commerce, community groups, NGOs, media, professional associations.
- Australian businesses - may also apply, noting that proposals must not provide, or aim to provide, a direct commercial benefit to any Australian or partner country company or consortium.
- Australian organisations from a wide range of academic, research, business, industry, media, NGOs, professional groups and government may apply to host ALA fellows. To qualify, organisations will be required to demonstrate region-specific linkages and the relevance of the proposed programs to the priority areas.
- Partner country counterpart organisations and individual fellows may not apply directly for support. They must be sponsored by an Australian organisation. They may initiate contact with their Australian counterpart to explore their interest in applying for fellowship funding.
Selection criteria
Selection will be on the following criteria:
- Academic record - very high level results achieved in a degree(s) from an internationally recognised university and an assessment of the likely success in further study.
- Leadership and personal qualities - leadership qualities and experience as demonstrated by professional, educational, community and other relevant achievements. Leadership qualities include integrity, adaptability, initiative, ambassadorial potential and vision.
- Potential outcomes - to the individual, his/her field of study and home country from the Australian education experience.
- Professional record - professional achievements as demonstrated by work experience, membership of professional bodies, awards of achievement and professional references.
